Problem: The square footage of windows in this end of the house caused the room to be extremely hot in the summer and cold in the winter.

LED Lights -The Superior Choice

Light Emitting Diodes (LED) are the most energy efficient source of light on the marketplace.  They create very little heat; virtually all of the energy consumed is turned into light.  Hence they are not wasteful like the ordinary (incandescent) light bulbs.

• Turn on instantly (no delay or flickering)
• * Do not use mercury (as do florescent tubes and CFL's).  No disposal problems.
• * Close to natural sunlight in colour, better for both one's eye-sight and moods!
• * Are usually directional, avoiding wasting the light that is thrown in every direction.

How do I compare LED lights to my regular lights?

LED's use about 1/10 of the power of regular incandescent bulbs.  So if you want a "40 W" bulb equivalent in light output then order a 4W LED. A LED light bulb can last you up to 100,000 hours compared to 8,000 for compact fluorescent and 1,000 for a incandescent. That averages out to 12 hours of light per day for 12 years. LED light bulbs are so energy efficient that, depending on how often you have them on, they'll actually pay for themselves in a year or two.

To be more technical and accurate, lights are rated in lumens. If the quantity of light is important, do compare various light sources in this common measurement.

This will depend on the bulbs. For example lets look at a 40w incandescent and the SBLD 128s Obstruction. Both are rated at about 500 lumens but the LED light is rated at 5w and will last for 50,000 hours.

Difference: $ 326!  As electricity prices rise this number is likely to increase significantly.  In 12 years electricity will likely cost at least $0.20/kw, making the difference in operating cost to be closer to $700!

Fireplace Draft Stopper

Problem: Chimneys are responsible for up to 30% of the heat loss in your home! Dampers are not effective at stopping all your heated air from blowing up the chimney!

Solution:The re-usable Fireplace Draft Stopper.

The Fireplace DraftStopper (also referred to as the Fireplace Plug or Chimney Pillow) is an original Canadian invention. It is an inflatable 'pillow', made from a specially formulated polyurethane material, designed to seal the fireplace when it is not being used.

It can reduce your heating and air conditioning costs by as much as 30 percent, often paying for itself in a single energy bill. The material used to construct the Fireplace DraftStopper is very durable (strong enough to stand on) and grabs well against masonry or metal surfaces. This material has undergone rigorous testing to ensure it will withstand seasonal temperature changes and creosote deposits without puncturing.

Fireplace dampers are often missing or warped allowing costly heated or cooled air to escape up the chimney. The Fireplace DraftStopper fits below the damper in the firebox and seals the chimney from air leakage and downdrafts. As an additional benefit it stops unpleasant odours, outside pollution, and blocks annoying noises.

By stopping air from being sucked up your chimney you are drastically slowing down the amount of outside air infiltrating your home.

Safety: The Fireplace DraftStopper comes with a fluorescent orange warning label attached to the inflation tube that is clearly visible should you prepare to build a fire. If, despite the warning, you fail to remove the Fireplace DraftStopper before lighting a fire testing by Warnock Hersey Labs in British Columbia found the Fireplace DraftStopper melted , fell onto the fire and smothered the flames. 100's of units were destroyed during the testing and in every case the Fireplace DraftStopper did not pose a fire hazard, therefore it was deemed to be a passive product.
