What is the gas mileage on your house?

A silly question, yet more people are asking what to expect in terms of energy costs in a prospective house, and wanting to know how to reduce the cost of running their current house. After all, a mortgage is not the only cost of owning a home! As energy prices are expected to rapidly rise in the next decade asking about the "gas mileage" of a house only makes sense.

This is even more true when one considers the fact that a more energy efficient home also has these (and other) features:Easier to sell your home

  • greater comfort
  • better performance when the power goes out (stays warmer longer)
  • better for your health (e.g. asthma rates are usually lower in "green" homes)
  • has higher resale values (at least dollar-for-dollar, often more)
  • is easier to sell -especially important when the market is bearish
  • makes great conversation starters!

Many existing homes can be improved significantly by using relatively inexpensive technologies, such as caulking, installing water-saving devices and more. Ask us for more tips!

Heat loss in your home
North Americans are mostly unaware that the #1 energy mover in buildings is radiant heat, accounting for 50 - 80% of all heat movement! Windows are large thermal holes with radiant heat, unless they have low-e coatings, film or other methods to absorb or reflect that radiant heat. Ask us how to stop wasting so much heat through windows.
